Quelling the Disputes

Despite all of the pro-veggie proof there is, vegetarianism is a lifestyle that not many are willing to consider for themselves. Some concerns are invalid, like worries about meal versatility, price, or taste, which can all be silenced using vegetarian cookbooks, home gardening, and price-check and Wal-Mart. Some concerns are more valid, like the argument that the vegetarian diet does provide all of the nutrients a human body needs, or the concern that vegetarian diets can lead to eating disorders. However, even these claims are not entirely informed, as the benefits of a balanced vegetarian diet can undeniably outweigh than the detriments.

It’s common knowledge that meat is a common high source of protein. By cutting out that food group from your diet, many believe that a vegetarian’s opportunity to receive protein is reduced by an unhealthy amount. However, since meat is the go-to source of protein, many people aren’t even aware of what other foods can also be a high source of that important nutrient.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) published a journal that discussed how a vegetarian diet could provide all of the same nutrients as a omnivorous one, saying “Plant protein can meet protein requirements when a variety of plant foods in consumed and energy needs are met.” The journal also explains how the body’s standards for essential amino acids, iron, zinc, calcium, and other necessary vitamins can also be met in a vegetarian diet.

People often have a natural tendency to abuse an excuse when one becomes available. So unfortunately, the claim that vegetarian diets may lead to eating disorders comes from a history of people who struggle with an eating disorder, use vegetarianism as an excuse to hide their illness. Physicians working with the AND released a study on whether or not vegetarianism can lead to eating disorders. The study said, “vegetarians may experience the health benefits associated with increased fruit and vegetable intake… [However,] it may also be important to investigate an individual’s motives for choosing a vegetarian diet.” I think this is an important realization that we need to remember. Just because some people push the diet too far, doesn’t mean that it can’t be extremely beneficial to your body when it is managed properly.

TOPIC RECIPE: Grilled Pesto Pizza

An always-great way to introduce yourself or others to a vegetarian meal is pizza, mostly because pizza is the best.
